About the museum
Welcome to the house of biological diversity!
Gothenburg Natural History Museum is Gothenburg’s oldest museum. It was established in 1833, when it was based on the collections of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg. The museum moved from the East India building to a new, purpose-built location in Slottsskogen in 1923, where it was extended in 1981.
The museum has a collection of about 10 million animals and the permanent exhibition shows a wide selection of the Earth’s fauna, from single-celled amoeba to the proud African elephant in display in the centre of the mammal room.
Unique animals and environments
The marine section displays a young blue whale and in the department on human development we meet a scale replica of Lucy. A special and unique item in the museum is Olof Gylling’s well-preserved dioramas, which have remained untouched since the 1920s. The museum’s permanent exhibition also contains a number of models that illustrate various scientific developments. Talks are arranged on relevant topics, by either internal or external lecturers.
The museum is a member of NAMSA, the Natural History Museums’ Cooperation Organization, and its European counterpart, CETAF. We are also a member of ICOM, the International Council of Museums, an organisation for museums and museum professionals whose purpose is to develop and improve museums around the world.
