History of Life on Earth and Amazing Diversity

In this section of the museum’s permanent exhibitions we tell you the story of the history of Earth and the evolutionary history of life on Earth beginning 3.8 billion years ago and stretching until the present day. Welcome to this evolutionary journey and meet fossils, insects, butterflies, cephalopods and dinosaur skeletons.

The Birds Galleries

The museum’s bird galleries have birds from all over the world. There is a lot to discover here - everything from the world’s largest bird, the ostrich, down to the smallest one, the humming bird. Please note that we are carrying out lighting improvements in the bird galleries. Parts of Birds of the World on floor 4 are temporarily closed Tuesday March 11 until April 27.

The Mammals Gallery

In the Mammals Gallery you can explore the rich diversity of mammals living on land, from the enormous African elephant to the diminutive pygmy shrew.

The Whale Hall

The Whale hall has finally re-opened after being carefully renovated for a year. Welcome to see an exhibition about the evolution of whales.

Dioramas

By visiting our dioramas you will get a unique momentary view of some familiar Swedish natural landscapes which were richly populated by animals in the past. They have all been carefully recreated. Building peepshows took ten years and any amount of patience to do it correctly.
